Welcome to FACS By the Book!

The Reading Resource for Family and Consumer Science Teachers

This website is devoted to equipping Family and Consumer Science teachers to make reading an integral part of their curriculum. We hope to achieve this goal by making this site a comprehensive resource for FACS literacy.

Sections on this site include:

Reader’s Retreat
Ideas, projects, patterns and directions for creating an area in your classroom designed to encourage students to enjoy reading.

FACS Teacher’s Survival Guide
A collection of helpful resources that will make teaching reading and other core concepts easy, practical, and enjoyable.

The Fabric of Our Lives
History comes to life on the pages of historical novels. This section of the website will feature novels, projects, recipes and other resources depicting home life in days gone by.

In The Spotlight
Each month we will feature a different novel with strong connections to the Family and Consumer Science curriculum. Special features will include Q & A’s with well-known authors, projects, recipes and other surprises.

FACS By The Book Club
Still in development, this section will be devoted to offering incentives to students to read books that are part of the FACS Bookshelf collection.

A Team Effort
Each of the books included in the FACS Bookshelf collection has been screened to determine its appropriateness for classroom use. FACS teachers around the country have volunteered to read and evaluate titles for this website. We are always looking for new participants in the FACS Reading Team. If you like to read, check out this unique opportunity.

On The Right Track
Choosing to incorporate reading into the FACS curriculum elevates the perception of FACS by emphasizing core academic concepts. This section will provide guidelines and rationale for building FACS literacy.

Adventures in FACS
A comprehensive catalog of novels and works of non-fiction selected and screened for use in the FACS classroom. Whether you are choosing a single title related to a specific course or unit or if your goal is to build a classroom library of books for your students, the FACS Bookshelf will enable you to make your selections with confidence.

We hope you find FACS By the Book useful, inspiring and entertaining. Come back and visit us often and don’t forget to share what you’ve discovered with your fellow FACS professionals.
