The Fabric of Our Lives

A well-written work of fiction can bring to life the human condition in a much more personal way than any history textbook ever could. When students connect with the characters in a historical novel, they learn to appreciate the challenges that were part of everyday life during the time period depicted. Students can envision what it was like to live without today’s modern conveniences and within the social constraints that no longer exist in today’s society.

Using the At Home With History Timeline, we have identified works of historical fiction that accurately depict life in America at various times during our history. These novels also emphasize many of concepts in the FACS curriculum. By incorporating these novels into your curriculum, you will be reinforcing both FACS concepts and information presented in the social studies area of your school’s curriculum.
