"A man practices the art of adventure when he breaks the chain of routine and renews his life through reading new books, traveling to new places, making new friends, taking up new hobbies and adopting new viewpoints."

We give our students a true gift when we instill in them a love for reading. The pages of a good book can be both education and an escape–two things that all our students need. The FACS curriculum provides a framework for linking reading with creative activities such as cooking, crafts, and other hands-on endeavors. When we bring the characters in a book to life through applied activities, we make reading more interesting and fun for students. The novels on The FACS Bookshelf offer opportunities for encouraging students to enjoy reading while reinforcing important FACS concepts.

The novels that have been selected for The FACS Bookshelf have a connection to the FACS curriculum in either theme or reference. Look for this symbol to discover key FACS concepts, curriculum links and instructional suggestions related to FACS Bookshelf selections. These FACS keys appear on the individual book page for each title.

Each novel has been evaluated for classroom appropriateness by either myself or one of the members of our FACS Reading Team. The novels have been categorized to make it easier for you to select books that will enhance your FACS content. Please remember that the recommendations made on this website are not a substitute for your personal evaluation. You should never introduce a novel into your curriculum without first reading the novel and receiving sanction by your district, building or department administration. We do not represent that the novels offered on FACS By The Book will meet with approval in every school district and community.
